She is the author of the memoir, The Solace of Stones: Finding a Way through Wilderness, published in April 2016 by the University of Nebraska Press/American Lives Series. The Solace of Stones explores Julie's coming of age and the complexities of memory, loss, and identity borne by a family homesteading in the modern West.

Her essay, Shadow Animals, from her memoir, appeared in The Georgia Review; the essay received a Special Mention in The Pushcart Prize XXXIX: Best of the Small Presses 2015 and was nominated for a National Magazine Award.
