Shann Ray

Shann Ray grew up in Montana, spent part of his childhood on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in southeast Montana and has served as a visiting scholar in Europe, Asia, and South America. His books include the poetry collection Balefire, the novel American Copper, and the story collection American Masculine.  He is also the author of a work of political theory called Forgiveness and Power in the Age of Atrocity. His poetry and prose have been honored with the American Book Award, the High Plains Book Award, the Western Writers of America Spur Award, the Foreword Book of the Year Readers’ Choice Award, and the Bakeless Prize. A former collegiate and professional basketball player and National Endowment for the Arts Fellow. Ray now lives in Spokane, Washington, where he teaches leadership and forgiveness studies at Gonzaga University.  His work has been featured in Poetry, Esquire, McSweeney's, Narrative, Montana Quarterly, Salon, and Northwest Review. Because of his wife and three daughters, he believes in love.
