Through our partnership with Free Verse, a local organization dedicated to empowering incarcerated youth through writing, celebrated poet Danez Smith will visit a juvenile detention center before performing at MBF. Danez is the author of [insert] boy (2014, YesYes Books) and their 2nd collection, Don't Call Us Dead, is forthcoming from Graywolf Press in 2017. Often centered around intersections of race, class, sexuality, faith, and social justice, Danez uses rhythm, fierce raw power, and image to re-imagine the world. They are a 2-time Individual World Poetry Slam finalist.
